Dr Christy Burzio appointed Vice Chair of BSB Independent Decision-making Body
We are delighted to report that Christy Burzio has been appointed as the new Vice-Chair of the Independent Decision-Making Body at the Bar Standards Board (“BSB”).
The Independent Decision-Making Body (“IDB”) was established in October 2019, replacing the Professional Conduct Committee. If it is thought that a barrister may have breached the BSB Handbook, the IDB is responsible for deciding whether to refer the case on to a Disciplinary Tribunal. The IDB can deal with the case itself under the Determination by Consent rules, impose an administrative sanction, or dismiss the allegations if it believes that there is not enough evidence that the Handbook has been breached. The IDB is made up of a pool of barristers and lay members. Its panels always have a lay majority.
Commenting on the appointment, Mark Neale, BSB Director General, said: “I am delighted to welcome Christy Burzio as the IDB’s new Vice-Chair. Her experience and insight will be invaluable in helping the IDB continue to reach fair and independent decisions on regulatory issues efficiently and effectively.”
Christy said: “I am honoured to take on this role at a time when independent regulation is more important than ever. I look forward to working with colleagues across the IDB to uphold the integrity of the decision-making process and to contribute to the BSB’s mission of maintaining confidence in the regulation of barristers.’
Andrew Butler KC, Head of Chambers commented: “It is great to see a member of Tanfield appointed to this important role. Christy will be an engaging and capable Vice-Chair and her appointment reflects her commitment to the Bar and the legal market generally, a commitment which we at Tanfield share.”
