Mini-pupillage is an excellent way for those considering a twelve-month pupillage to experience the working atmosphere in Chambers. It is also a unique opportunity for students to find out whether they might be interested in a career at the Bar.

Tanfield offers mini pupillages in three windows each year. These are currently:

  • 13th January 2025 – 28th April 2025: applications close 29th November 2024.
  • 5th May 2025 – 28th July 2025: applications close 28th March 2025.
  • 1st September 2025 – 15th December 2025: applications close 25th July 2025.

Applications should consist of a CV and a covering letter explaining why the applicant is applying for a mini-pupillage with Tanfield. These applications will be assessed against Tanfield’s pupillage criteria, which includes an interest in property law.

Tanfield intends to offer six mini -pupillages in each window.

As part of Tanfield’s commitment to promoting access to the Bar, some of these mini-pupillage will be offered to candidates who have overcome disadvantage. Applicants are invited to highlight any relevant information in their covering letter.

Mini pupillages are unfunded, but Tanfield will reimburse reasonable travel costs within the M25. Further funding for travel within the United Kingdom and a lunch allowance is available for mini-pupils who require such additional funding to take up a mini-pupillage. Applicants who believe they meet the criteria for additional funding should set out any relevant information in their covering letter.

Applicants should set out in their covering letter which weeks they are available during the relevant window and Tanfield will use its best efforts to accommodate successful applicants’ availability. It is unlikely that Tanfield will be able to offer mini pupillages during August or over the Christmas period.

Applications should be submitted by e-mail to minipupillage@tanfieldchambers.co.uk. An Equality and Diversity monitoring form is available in the following link and may be submitted with the application.  Completing the Equality and Diversity form is optional but we would be grateful if applicants completed the form.
